Mathematical modeling for technologies and natural sciences

Researches in mathematical modeling have been carried out in Latvia for more than 40 years. Internationally recognized researches of heat and mass transfer modeling, flows of gas and liquid matter in non-homogeneous media, hydrodynamics and magneto hydrodynamics have been performed. International conferences on mathematical modeling are organized (last one was held in Jurmala in 2006). Current researches focus on studies of direct and inverse problems of mathematical physics in complex media. The results are used in such important industrial processes as intensive steel quenching or development of new kind of devices for more effective cooling (heating): pipes, refrigerators etc.

Theoretical problems of mathematical methods

Theoretical research in mathematics in Institute is mostly concentrated around traditional in Latvia research fields: differential equations, numerical methods, fuzzy algabraical and topological structures, optimal control problems, discrete mathematics and others. Despite the theoretical character of research a very serious attention is given to the applicability of theoretical results. It is worth to mention the justification of numerical methods for the second order eliptic and parabolic equations, especially for nonhomogeneous media with strong nonlinearities as well as averaging methods for stratified media.
